Smart Prosperity Institute (SPI) runs Canada’s largest research network focused on a stronger, cleaner economy, the Smart Prosperity Research Network.  As a center of global expertise, the Network convenes academic and other subject matter experts from Canada and around the globe, to inform leading policy thinking on the environment and economy.

The Smart Prosperity Research Network aims to meet three complimentary goals:

  1. Support environment-economy research projects by inter-disciplinary teams of researchers and graduate students,

  2. Leverage the expertise of the research network to identify emerging policy-oriented research topics by convening symposiums, webinars and workshops.

  3. Communicate environmental-policy research to government, academia, industry and the public through the Clean Economy Working Paper Series and the Researcher Spotlight Series

Based at the University of Ottawa’s Institute of the Environment, SPI attracts top research talent from around the world, with regular Fulbright Visiting Research Chairs and the first Canada Research Chair in climate economics, innovation and policy, Dr. Carolyn Fischer.

The network supports and trains emerging environmental policy practitioners and scholars through our Canada-wide student network. In addition to networking and mentoring opportunities, students in the network have the opportunity to share their work through the Student Blog Series. We also offer funding to cover travel costs associated with conference presentations for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Students and emerging researchers may also be interested in our "Research with Impact" Webinar Series that provides insights into communicating research to non-academic audiences to inform opinions and help shape outcomes.
