The carbon pricing systems that have been adopted by four Canadian provinces and are soon to be in place across Canada will have an impact on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). But because carbon pricing is a flexible policy and allows businesses to be innovative in adapting to it, SMEs are in a unique position to manage cost increases while also capturing opportunities like increased market share for clean innovation and possibilities in the carbon offset market.

 

Clean innovation is a hot topic, especially with the recent federal budget betting big on cleantech.  Following 3 years of investigation, Smart Prosperity Institute has released a Policy Brief on Clean Innovation. This post explores our model for understanding clean innovation and the role of governments in accelerating it.

 

Michelle Brownlee, Smart Prosperity Institute's Director of Policy, delivered these remarks on "Clean Technology in Canada’s Natural Resources Sectors" to the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Natural Resources in February 2017.

Canada’s transition to a stronger, cleaner, more innovative economy received a substantial boost when Minister of Finance Bill Morneau tabled the 2017 Federal Budget.

The budget includes a significant emphasis on clean technology and innovation, tackling climate change and building a low-carbon economy – through a mix of new funds and fleshing out previous commitments.  In short:
 

    Smart Prosperity Institute commends the Government of Ontario for its work to address transportation emissions and its proposal to use a flexible, performance-based regulation. If well executed, the modern renewable fuel standard has the potential to reduce carbon intensity as well as incentivize clean innovation.
