The Smart Prosperity Institute (SPI) runs Canada’s largest research network focused on fostering a stronger, cleaner economy. As a centre of global expertise, the Network convenes academic and subject-matter experts from Canada and around the globe to inform leading policy thinking on the environment and economy. The Network aims to:

1. support environment-economy research projects led by inter-disciplinary teams of researchers and graduate students,
2. identify and advance emerging policy-oriented research topics by convening symposiums, webinars, and workshops; and
3. communicate environmental-policy research to government, academia, industry and the public, including through its Clean Economy Working Paper Series.

The Economics and Environmental Policy Research Network (EEPRN)

To support this research, SPI distributes funding, in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada, through the EEPRN. The EEPRN issues competitive requests for proposals seeking policy-relevant, academic research on the green economy. Successful projects are selected following a rigorous review, led by the independent EEPRN Advisory Committee. 

Committee members were chosen for their breadth of expertise in areas including corporate sustainability, environmental economics and climate policy. We are grateful for the Committee’s expert and impartial guidance in funding cutting-edge research that deepens understanding of the environment-economy nexus.

Current research projects

Students and emerging researchers

Our Canada-wide student network supports and trains emerging environmental policy practitioners and scholars. In addition to networking and mentoring opportunities, students can engage through:

• the Student Blog Series to share their work with a broader audience; and through
• our "Research with Impact" webinar series to learn how to communicate research to non-academic audiences, inform opinions and help shape outcomes.
