Smart Prosperity Institute welcomes world-renowned Canada 150 Research Chair plus more than 50 international experts--part of a new hub of global expertise on clean economic growth

March 29, OTTAWA--Smart Prosperity Institute, a national economic think tank based at the University of Ottawa, announced today $10M in new funding over 3-7 years to support a research network made up of more than 50 world-leading experts in clean economic growth. Headlining this new research network is newly appointed Canada 150 Research Chair, Dr. Carolyn Fischer.

Dr. Carolyn Fischer, a world-renowned economist and Senior Fellow at the Washington-based think tank Resources for the Future, will join Smart Prosperity Institute as Canada 150 Research Chair in Climate Economics, Innovation and Policy -- an announcement made separately today by The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science.

Dr. Fischer joins other internationally acclaimed experts in Smart Prosperity Institute’s new research network, including Mariana Mazzucato (University College London), Antoine Dechezlepretre (London School of Economics) and Margaret Taylor (Stanford University and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) among others.

The new research network is the largest such network in Canada and positions the University of Ottawa as one of the world’s premiere hubs of global expertise on clean economic growth.

The purpose of the research network is to aggressively ramp up the state of knowledge in Canada on building a prosperous, clean economy -- including hot button issues like carbon pricing, accelerating clean innovation, valuing nature and biodiversity, and how to make the transition to a green economy more inclusive.

“It’s an exciting time to be working on climate policy in Canada”, says Dr. Fischer, “and Smart Prosperity Institute has rapidly become a leading global centre for environment-economy thinking and policy change.”

Stewart Elgie, professor of law and economics at University of Ottawa and chair of Smart Prosperity Institute, believes that the research network will play an urgent role. “Canadian governments are among the leaders in the global effort to tackle climate change. This new research network will give them access to the world’s best thinking on crafting smart policies to reduce emissions and drive clean growth – drawing on a host of top global experts like Dr. Fischer, our new Canada 150 research chair.”
