Mr. Pavan Sukhdev, UNEP's Study Leader of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) study, and world-renowned international economic expert and banker will be coming to Canada for a whirlwind tour of Montreal (May 18), Ottawa (May 19) and Toronto (May 20), in preparation for the United Nations International Day for Biodiversity on May 22. Sustainable Prosperity, the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL)(external link) and the CIRANO(external link), together with partners from the NACEC and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, will host an Experts Workshop at the NACEC to discuss the outcomes of a new global study on the economics of ecosystem and biodiversity (TEEB), focusing on ways to increase incentives for the protection of biodiversity and the sustainable use of ecosystem services in North America. The Workshop will feature a presentation from Dr Pavan Sukhdev, the UNEP’s Study Leader of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity study (TEEB, often called the ‘Stern Report for Biodiversity’).

Moving Forward into the Global Green Economy | Guest Keynote & Luncheon Event

The Luncheon features a keynote speech by Mr Pavan Sukhdev, a world-class expert who leads the United Nations Environment Programme’s Green Economy Initiative, including the UNEP’s Study Leader of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity study (TEEB, often called the ‘Stern Report for Biodiversity’) for the EU and others, and is also a senior banker, the former Chief Operating Officer of Global Emerging Markets for Deutsche Bank.

Mr. Sukhdev's biography:


Pavan Sukhdev leads the United Nations Environment Programme's Green Economy Initiative, which includes the Green Economy Report, the Green Jobs report and The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity study (TEEB), of which he is also Study Leader.

Pavan brings extensive experience from finance, economics and science to these projects, and is internationally known as a financial innovator. As a senior banker, he founded and went on to join the board of Deutsche Bank's Global Markets Centre in Mumbai, a 300+ person cutting-edge front office which does leading-edge work for Global Markets in London, New York and elsewhere.

Pavan has also held positions with Deutsche Bank as Head of Global Markets Finance for Asia-Pacific, and late Chief Operating Officer of the Bank's Global Emerging Markets Division, a leading and multiple award-wining markets division represented in over thirst countries across Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle-East and Africa.

Pavan has written for newspapers and magazines (Economic Times, Indian Express, Sanctuary) to popularize the concept and measurement of green economic growth. He has also lectured frequently on these and related topics at forums such as IUCN (Geneva and Asia), the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and more.
